How Many Convenience Stores Are There In The US?
We evaluated 54,126 stores from 8 grocery stores across the United States.
Shell is the biggest convenience store business in the United States, with 11,563 locations across 49 states. Having 10,131 locations in 46 states, Exxon is the second-largest retailer. 7-Eleven is in third place, having 8,845 locations in 35 states.
Convenience Store Chains With Most Locations Per State

Exxon outlets have a stronghold in 12 states. Chevron is in the second spot, with stores in 11 states, most of which are on the west coast. Despite having the most convenience store locations, Shell only holds a monopoly in seven states, five of which are in the southeast.
Only 16 states in the US have Casey’s, but it rules supreme in five of them. Convenience stores are so widespread in America that 93% of the population lives within a few minutes of one.
Shell Convenience Stores
In the United States, there seem to be 11,563 Shell stores. The states with the most Shell stores are Texas (1,574), California (1,166), and Florida (1,029). Shell convenience stores can be found across the country, except for Montana.
Shell offers grocery credits that may be used at participating Shell locations. Customers can shop at Stop and Shop, Hy-Vee, Fred Meyers, Dillions, Jewel Osco, Kroger, and its various companies in their local grocers. Moreover, a quarter of Shell shops participate in the reward scheme.
Exxon Convenience Stores
In the United States, there are 10,131 Exxon stores. The states with some of the most Exxon stores are Texas (1,565), Florida (797), and New York (600).
7-Eleven Convenience Stores
In the United States, there are 9,492 7-Eleven locations spread throughout 38 states. The states with the most 7-Eleven locations are California (1,902), Texas (1,411), and Florida (1,011).
A typical 7-Eleven store is compact, with a limited selection of food, drinks, and other high-turnover items. 7-Eleven stores, contrary to their name, are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Chevron Convenience Stores
Chevron has 7,433 locations in the United States. The states having the most Chevron stores are California (2574), Texas (1115), and Georgia (623).
Chevron’s Extra Mile services, which are well-stocked, are available in 77 percent of Chevron locations. Beer and wine are sold in 16% of Chevron locations.
Circle K Convenience Stores
There seem to be 6,618 Circle K locations in 46 states in the United States. The states having the most Circle K stores are Florida (911), Texas (735), and Arizona (632).
Kangaroo Express, On the Run, Corner Store, and Flash Foods were acquired by Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., the owner of Circle K stores, and rebranded as Circle K locations. Currently, 20% of Circle K locations are franchises that have been rebranded.
BP Convenience Stores
In the United States, there are 4,101 BP shops in 31 states. The states having the most BP stores are North Carolina (601), Wisconsin (572), and Illinois (567). BP locations are primarily found on the east coast and in the Midwest.
Speedway Convenience Stores
In the United States, there are 3,275 Speedway locations. The states with the most Speedway locations are Ohio (462), Michigan (294), and Indiana (290). Only 36 states have Speedway stores, with the majority of them located in the Midwest and along the east coast.
Casey’s Convenience Stores
Casey’s, a convenience store chain based in the Midwest, with 2,665 locations in 17 states. The states having the most Casey’s stores are Iowa (556), Illinois (521), and Missouri (363).
Casey’s isn’t far behind Circle K and 7-Eleven in terms of store footprint. This iconic Midwest convenience shop goes above and beyond standard c-store fare by offering excellent pizza, bakery, and soft-serve options. Casey’s offers online shopping and pizza delivery at 35% of its locations.

With 89.2 % of locations open 24 hours a day, Circle K has the most convenience stores open. With 65 percent of stores open 24 hours a day, Speedway is second, followed by Shell with 54.2 % of stores open 24 hours a day.

With significant government support and public investment, the convenience store industry has already established itself as a central concern of the retail market. Increased rivalry from dollar and discount stores built by major food and drugstore groups is one issue.
